What Is an Inclined Plane?
A ramp is an example of an inclined plane — a simple machine that helps us move from a lower height to a higher one with greater ease.
It may look simple, but it represents a powerful idea: by changing the path we take, we change how the work feels.
Whether we use a steep ramp or a gentle one, reaching the same height requires the same total amount of energy. The difference lies in how that energy is used.
What’s the Difference?
A steeper slope asks for that energy more quickly. The climb is shorter, but the effort feels bigger in the moment.
A gentler slope stretches the journey out. The same work is done — just across a longer distance — allowing the body to move steadily and smoothly upward.
Different paths. Same destination. A beautiful example of physics unfolding right beneath our feet.
How Do Stairs Fit In?
Stairs follow the same principle as a ramp.
Instead of one continuous incline, stairs divide the climb into individual steps. Each step offers a pause, a rhythm, and a manageable rise.
It’s the same change in height — simply experienced in a different way.

Fun Fact: An infant’s brain is beautifully rich in mirror neuron activity. These specialized brain cells fire not only when a baby performs an action, but also when they watch someone else do the same action. In a very real neurological sense, when your baby sees you smile, wave, clap, or explore, their brain is lighting up as if they are practicing the action themselves.
